Robin Hood DVD review

*the following is from viewing of the widescreen edition of the film only

He is a symbol of freedom worldwide, there have been many movie adaptations of the famed outlaw Robin Hood, but in this one starring Kate Blanchett as Maid Marion and Russell Crowe as robin hood, this is one of my favorites.

MAIN FEATURE
In the main movie it is not about how Robin Hood stops the sheriff it is how he gets started, from the crusades with Richard the lion heart in the 12th century crusades, to Nottingham. This is the story before the legend, how did maid Marion and robin meet. Where did he get will, john, friar tuck and the merry men, how does the Sherwood forest play into all of this. These questions are brought to light in this movie and are done very well. You can tell Ridley Scott did some research on the background of the times and the people and it shows throughout the entire movie.

SPECIAL FEATURES
the unrated director cut, which is the one I saw, has no features save both the theatrical release and the unrated directors cut which is well done and shows extra scenes.

NEGATIVES
the special features are few is about the only negative I can see about this film.

FINAL THOUGHTS
this movie is a very well done movie and has a very special place in my heart while it updates the legend it also does it justice by not watering it down or trying to make it politically correct which seems to be happening a lot here lately in hollywood. It would make a great gift for any fan of the century films, or of the legend of Robin hood. But the special features being so few may make you want to look for the blu ray edition.

8 out of ten stars
